Sociologists have asked this question in countless ways, and if the person being asked has offspring, the most common answer is their role of father or mother. You could say husband or wife, which would also be a common response. For the most part people have some understanding that your influence over your family trumps everything else you do in your life. Yet, this is the role that you are most ill-equipped to perform. Really, (like us) you don’t have a clue what you are doing or why. We’re all first-time parents.
